I need to estimate fuel consumption for a trip from Hamilton to Christchurch (around 1,000km) in a 1993 Honda Accord with a manual transmission. I found a site http://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find.do?action=sbs&id=9930 that quotes consumption rates at 11.2 litres per 100km around the city, 8.2 on the open road, and 9.8 as an aggregate. I will have a large object (500mm high) on my roof rack and the car will be loaded up with household effects. I realise there are many other variables to consider, but as a rough estimate, how much fuel do you think the car will use per 100km? Thanks

This would depend on a lot of external factors like the shape of the object on the roof racks, weather conditions (head winds), the load, tyre pressures, mechanical condition of the vehicle, driving style, aircon on or off, etc. You can expect at least a 20 percent increase in fuel usage with the vehicle fully loaded and a large object on the roof - around 11.76L/100km - rough estimate.

Thanks heaps, that gives me plenty to go on. Most appreciated.
