I have just bought a 2004 Mazda Demio. It has an S gear option under Drive. What does this mean?

The "S" stands for Second. If the hold button is not selected then it will keep the transmission in 1st, 2nd or 3rd gear. It is normally used in slow moving traffic or going up hills. It prevents the gearbox from going into 4th gear.
