I am looking to trade in my VW Golf TDi 2009 as it has come out of its warranty period. I’m debating whether to go diesel or petrol this time round. I have checked the approximate costs on the fuelsaver website, but it does not take into consideration the licence fee differences and the additional charges likely to come into place for diesel vehicles this month.
I would like some advice on costs, the environmental pros of diesel etc and comments on the cars below if possible. I travel around 12000kms a year, mainly commuting across Auckland’s clogged motorways. The vehicle I buy may need to tow a small caravan or trailer.
I am considering the following:
Another VW Golf – petrol or diesel
Kia Sportage
Hyundai 130i
Or Mazda cx5.
With the mileage you are travelling, a petrol car would cost less to operate, plus the late model petrol powered Golf TSi is so fuel efficient that there may be little or no benefit in going for the TDi. However, you're thrown a bit of a curve ball by adding that you have a need to tow a small caravan.
Given this requirement, I don't think the Golf is really suitable, also due to the low down torque advantages of diesel, it is preferable for towing.
So, given that a car would not be the best option for towing, that rules out the Hyundai i30 (which I presume you meant, as there's no 130i).
So of the two others you have mentioned, the Mazda CX-5 diesel would be the most suitable. There's nothing wrong with the Sportage either but the CX-5 is a newer model, offers up to the minute technology, great fuel efficiency and a high spec level. The CX-5 GSX diesel is a great value package, and would be my preference.
