We drove a RAV4 as a rental recently in the South Island and achieved a little over 8.5l/100km. This was over a 3-day period.

The AA operating costs for this engine size is currently 78.1 cents per km. This figure is based on ownership of a new vehicle over a 5-year period and includes amongst other things vehicle depreciation.

The older a vehicle gets the less depreciation applies so you need to take that into account with your vehicle.
