Could you advise which 1500-1600cc cars have a history of being most economical to run/maintain?

Hard question to answer as you don't provide an age of vehicle, but all the new car manufactures are very similar with their fuel consumption figures and regular maintenance costs these days, particularly for the first say 3-4 years.

With older cars, the mainstream Japanese brands have the better reliability and overall running costs record.
