Is there much difference in fuel usage between a manual and an automatic of the same model?

The manufacturers claimed fuel consumption figures always favour manual but the gap is closing as new models are released.

It’s not a given however that one transmission type is going to be better than another. The key is how a vehicle is driven.

Differences can be around half a litre per 100km depending on vehicle age and engine size.
