Hi there. I have just figured out the fuel consumption of my car and I'm wondering whether it is reasonable. It is a 1989 Corona 2.0 litre auto (Model ST171). It is currently using about 9 litres per 100km - 80% highway and 20% town driving. Is that a fair consumption considering it is an older car, but well maintained?

Also it says to run it on 95 petrol. Am I able to use 91 in it, and would it be worthwhile running cost wise (considering the drop in power)?

Thanks

Yes, your fuel consumption sounds very realistic to me.

Our technical information does not list this particular engine, the nearest I can get is the later model ST195. That engine would run fine on 91 octane based on its listed compression ratio.

It may be worth contacting Toyota NZ asking for their opinion. You could also ask them what the compression ratio for this engine is (they should still have this information in their technical archives).

If it is under 10:1 then I would have thought 91 octane was OK.

Natural Resources Canada’s Office of Energy Efficiency has compiled fuel-consumption ratings for passenger cars (not exceeding a gross vehicle weight of 3855 kg, or 8500 lbs.) and light-duty pickup trucks, vans and special purpose vehicles sold in Canada. Use this information to compare the fuel consumption of various makes and models and to select the most fuel-efficient vehicle for your needs.
