Is there any difference between different companies diesel product? BP seems to be consistently more expensive than say Shell or Caltex.
BP have recently introduced a new diesel fuel called Ultimate Diesel which costs 1 cent per litre more than standard diesel which BP still sells at other outlets. The base product is the same as other diesel brands but BP adds an additive which they claim cleans the engine to better protect it against corrosion and may improve performance. But other brands also add additives like Caltex Techron diesel which they claim has similar properties but doesn't cost any more. The AA hasn't tested these enhanced diesels but we have seen independant documentation which supports the claims and we are satisifed the claims can be substantiated.
Our technical staff advise the need for a corrosive inhibitor is now an essential ingredient of any commercially available diesel fuel due to the new engine technology and the increase in common rail engine design. Modern diesel engines do not tolerate contaminated fuel neither do they function efficiently when even the smallest amounts of corrosion develop in the fuel system.
At the end of the day if you don't believe BP Ultimate Diesel is worth an extra 1 cent per litre then we suggest you fill up at a competing brand.
