Hi there
We revently purchased ( less than three months ago) a 2008 RAV 4 2WD with 700000 + km odometer
The WOF is for one year and written on the inspection sheet it recommends next service May 2019 which we asume indicates its last service was around May this year.
Today on a routine check while filling petrol to our surprise it needed 1 liter oil
( so only 6 months out from last service) Concerned, we googled and discovered to our dismay lots of articles online ( but not in NZ) complaining about that this is a “known fault” ( even an attempt to take a class action against Toyota) of Ravs of this age 2006-8
We did HEAPS of research including through AA prior to choosing a Rav 4 and found nothing but glowing reports cetainly nothing about a “fault” causing over consumption of oil
IS this a serious issue? what rights do we have re the three month mechanical warrentee period that we are still within?
Appreciate some advice here
Thanks
Kate

Hi Kate,
The first thing is to talk to your selling dealer and let them know your concern, the next step is to carryout a consumption test in order to actually ascertain if your vehicle does have an oil consumption issue. It is more common to have a vehicle use some oil between services- but there can be a point at which it is too much.

Hi thanks for the suggestion
Still wondering though if the AA has come across this issue as a generic problem with this age 2006-2008 RAV 4 ?
thanks

Hi there,
We've not heard of this problem through our advice or blog channels as of late, if there was an issue when these vehicles were new they would usually have been dealt with under warranty, but as they are now 10-12 years old, any information available might be historical.
