I am wanting to upgrade my car and need something that can tow a small caravan. Therefore a diesel powered vehicle in the 2.5litre range would be ideal. However, with all the talk overseas about banning diesels I am concerned that similar changes to our rules may be introduced and seriously affect the resale value of diesels vehicles, especially cars and SUVs.
What is the opinion of the AA on this matter?
Thanks, Rex.

Hi Rex,
It is true that electric vehicles are increasing and a lot of vehicle manufacturers are introducing this technology into their new vehicles and in some cases date given. Whether it be total electric vehicles, hybrids, or the potential for electric capability in a model, the need for the combustion engine will still be around for a while yet. Any flow on effect will take its time to reach NZ.
Modern diesel vehicles are very good and if it suits your needs there is no problem with that. We don’t see the bottom falling out of the market overnight. Keep in mind that the two top sellers last year in NZ (Ranger and Hilux) were predominately diesel powered.
