I have just received my vehicle from a panel beater who replaced a rear tailgate and light. I've just discovered on driving back my brakes arent working like they were and the brake fault light is on. Why would the panel beater have touched my brakes they were working fine when i took it in

Give the panel shop a call and let them know about the fault. You may have to return your vehicle where the repair took place, If it is unsafe to drive you should have the vehicle towed back.

It does sound Unlikely that the tailgate replacement could cause this fault , possibly an electronic issue may have been caused by the rear light replacement ? either way it must be investigated.
