Hi there
Yesterday I took my VW Golf (2005) in for a a service (165000km). After picking it up from the mechanics it had been driven for a bout 2 mins before the engine started to play up - shuddering like it was about to stall and changing down gears then over-revving - its an auto.
It was towed back to the mechanic's. I explained what had happened and asked would something during the service have damaged anything. After investigating for most of today he has told me the service had caused no problems and that the crank shaft sensor needs replacing.
My question is, would the sensor have likely been damaged in the service (and I'm now possibly up for a hefty bill due to a mistake on the mechanic's behalf), or is this just a case of bad timing?
Cheers

Hi there,
Due to the out-of-the-way location of the crank sensor it is unlikely that the technician would have done anything to disturb it. Unless the sensor was removed to access a crank seal, or cam belt replacement (if it had one) and somehow was fitted incorrectly, generally there is no need to go near it. So it may just be a very unfortunate coincidence.
