Hi,
I have a vw golf in for a service and was initially told it needed a new cam angle sensor ($100). When I returned the car to get part fitted I was informed that the timing chain was stretched and the total cost of service, cam angle sensor and timing chain would cost $4845. This is with getting parts from Russia. If I choose the nz parts it will cost $6163. I know there have been timing chain tensioner issues with certain vw cars. Is this cost about right?
Thanks

Hi there,
It does sound a lot of money, but is what would be expected considering the enormity of the job and cost of the genuine parts and labour.
Timing chains are generally supposed to be maintenance free as opposed to belts, but when they do require any work to be carried out, it is very expensive.
