After 50+ years of driving I have just bought a lovely Nissan March 2004 and am now using automatic gears and have power steering for the first time, both of which I love.
What is the best driving practice when stopped at traffic lights, do I just keep my foot on the brake, or should I put the drive back to P and/or use the handbrake? I've googled this and all the information is so conflicting. Currently I am keeping my foot on the brake for a smooth effective getaway, but what is your advice? Thanks, Shona Thomson

Hi Shona,
Automatic vehicles are designed to be left in gear when stopping for short periods, like at traffic lights and intersections. Just remember to keep you foot on the brake to stop your car creeping forward. It would not be very economical to be putting the car in park and using the handbrake at every lights.
