I'm looking at purchasing an 04 odyssey, non absolute model. Now I've been reading conflicting stories about these vehicles, mainly to do with the transmission.
Some say don't touch with a 10 ft barge pole, but then others say that the used imported models don't have the cvt transmission that has all the problems.

So what I'm wanting to know is, is there anything to be worried about? Has the AA seen many of these problems? Also, is there any way to tell from just looking externally that it's a cvt?

Thanks

Hi there,
2004 looks to be the generation change over from 2nd to 3rd generation.
The 2.3ltr 2nd gen is listed as having a 4 speed auto, while after June 04 the 3rd gen has a 2.4ltr engine with cvt (1 speed).
Honda CVT's have been very talked about and often cause headaches around this date, however I have heard that is mostly due to the need of servicing with the correct fluid.
If in doubt, I recommend speaking to a transmission specialist about these vehicles.

Thanks for your reply. The one I am looking at is the 2.4ltr, so therefore it would have the cvt.
So you would still buy this vehicle if the correct servicing was done and the correct fluid used?

Do you know what the correct fluid is or would any mechanic know, or would I need to ring honda to find out

Thanks for your time

Honda will have genuine fluid and know how to service the transmission correctly as there is a factory advised method for this. It may be more expensive but worth it in the end. Or a transmission specialist may have an equally good equivalent.
CVT's are good for maintaining low fuel economy and smooth drive. You must drive it as they drive differently to conventional transmissions, it may be something you would get used to or not enjoy at all.

Ok thanks.

I guess in the end, what I'm trying to get at is, would you recommend buying these cars or would you recommend buying a 05 or 06 model, or does the year not make too much difference?

Or, would you recommend buying something else?

Thanks
