Good morning. I have a 1993 Toyota Carina (import) and for the last few months it has been very slow to change into overdrive. When it's warm it seems ok. On cooler days or at night it takes some 5km or more to warm up and was wondering could it be a faulty thermostat.
I presume the overdrive changes when the engine gets up to operating temperature. Could it be the thermostat or would it be something else. When the temp is warm all is good including the temperature gauge. I couldn't find an answer in the other peoples questions.
Hope you can help. thank you, Margaret.

Hi there,
This is correct, the car will not select overdrive until operating temp has been reached.
I would recommend taking the car to a technician to get the thermostat operation checked.
Especially with winter here, you want the car heating up correctly which will improve
fuel economy also.
