My Renault Megane was taken to my mechanic with a broken cambelt. I was given an estimate and told he would try his hardest to keep the bill under $3000. After weeks with no communication from him I phoned to be told that because the car was not charged for soo long that he couldn't get the electrics working. His auto electrician he uses couldn't either and referred the mechanic to another auto electrician. I asked my mechanic if I would be charged for these further repairs, as I don't believe I should be, and was told he would have to wear the labour costs. This has been going on 6 weeks and I have had no contact in nearly 2 weeks. I have taken notes of all our communications. I'm getting very angry and would like to know my rights.

If the fault with the electrics was as a result of something the mechanic has done wrong then the dealer should cover the cost to repair but at this stage the cause of the problem hasn't been determined and it might be unrelated to the work being carried out by the workshop in which case the repair will be for your cost.

Give the dealer the opportunity to find the fault and if they are struggling then speak to them about having the vehicle taken to the Renault agents for further investigation.

Can you advise which electrical components aren't working and the year of the vehicle?

I'm not too sure. He said when the auto electrician hooked it up to the machine(?) there was no response. It's a 1998 Scenic model.
