have checked for online help and also the owners manual. they tell you to run the engine and move the gear level through the gear changes then check the level. but they don't tell you to turn engine off before checking the level. am I supposed to turn engine off and let the oil settle before checking the level?

You got the first bit correct (shifting through the gears) but you do not turn the engine off when checking the auto transmissions oil level.

Ensure the vehicle is parked on a level surface.

With the transmission up to operating temperature, after shifting through the gears, place the gear lever in Park or Neutral. Remove the transmission oil dipstick and clean it with a clean and lint free rag.

Insert the dipstick fully into the tube and then remove it and check whether the oil level is on the correct mark on the dipstick.

If it needs topping up you should ensure that the correct grade auto-transmission fluid is used and that you do not overfill.

Some modern cars do not have a dipstick and there are other procedures to check the oil level. But this is the general method for older vehicles.

If you are unsure then it's best to get a mechanic to carry out the check/top-up.
