Does this have a CVT?
Does it have a cam belt or chain drive?
Thanks :-)

The Toyota Echo/Vitz is available with a CVT, conventional auto and manual transmission - it's best to stick to either a conventional auto or manual transmission version. In this year range it has a timing chain.

Thanks Donavan, So for the 2005 Echo auto, how do I find out if it is a CVT or conventional?
Any other comments about the Echo or comparison between those two generally for repairs...
:-)

They are basically the same vehicle with different badges (due to various markets) and the major difference is the Echo is available in sedan body that is sometimes badged Platz. The specifications will vary too.

The difference you should notice when you drive a vehicle that’s fitted with a CVT transmission is that compared with a conventional automatic there are no noticeable gear changes, as the ratios are constantly changing up and down with speed. When you floor the accelerator pedal the revs will climb high, almost like a slipping clutch sensation, and the vehicle speed will gradually increase.

An AA Pre-purchase Inspection should in most cases (if they can identify the type of transmission fitted) be able to provide you with the answer – whether it’s CVT or not.
