I have a 2000 Nissan Elgrand with the 3litre turbo intercooled diesel travelled 226,000km's. In the last 3 months the motor has developed a habit of stopping. This is a random event. It starts up fine, then when it moves about half a van length it stops dead, then needs several extended winds of the starter to finally get it to fire. This can happen from stone cold or when the engine is hot.

Sounds like you may have air in the fuel system which is a reasonably common fault.

It is definitely a job for a diesel specialist. Check for an AA Licensed repairer in your area.

Fitting a clear plastic pipe to the fuel return from the injection pump and checking for air bubbles is one check they may carry out to confirm the problem.

The most likely cause will be a leaking fuel pump driveshaft seal.

The pump will need to be removed and the seal replaced.

Be warned, more often than not, the shaft will be showing signs of wear and this will need to be remedied to stop the leak permanently.

We have heard costs ranging between $1000 and $3500 to fix this problem depending on the amount of wear and tear discovered once the job has been started.
