Hi,

I have a white car and noticed there is some rust on the boot lid rim (Where the boot lid meets the rear bumper) The rust has turned orange so i dont think a rust converter will help at this stage.

As its an older car i was hoping to do this myself and was wondering if you coould confirm if my approach is ok. Any paint lost will be in area rarely seen so not a major issue for me.

Here is my not so technical approach

1. Clean area where rust is
2. Using sandpaper, remove rust until clean metal is seen
3. Apply primer/rust protector to area
4. Allow car to dry then clean again

At this stage i'm not looking to repaint as this is an area only seen when opening the boot.

Also - is any rust an instant fail with a WOF or is it only is certain areas? Would a boot lid be an area where they could fail a WOF.? My next WOF is a few weeks away so I aim to do this before then. I have not noticed rust anywhere else. As its a white car i imagine it would be easy to spot unfortunately.

Any help is much appreciated

In theory, your approach seems sound, but I'd advise being very careful about carrying out panel repairs yourself if you're not really skilled in this area.
If this is merely staining on the paintwork, perhaps it will polish out?
Obviously, it's hard for us to comment without seeing it, but from your description, this is very unlikely to be a WoF fail as it's not in a structural part of the car.
