We recently bought a Ford Mondeo 2006, 2.0 liter petrol, 105kw at Turners Auction. We asked whether it was belt or chain driven, they told us chain. I also browsed the internet to answer this question, and it seemed it is indeed chain driven. It is a MK3 engine (2000-2007), it should have a chain. E.g. here:

And last but not least:

However, I just did a quick check and can only see 2 belts at the driver side of the engine?
So, is this perhaps something else? And if it is chain driven, where can I find it?

This engine has its camshaft driven by a chain. It is encased within the engine and you can't see it. Neither would you be able to see a cambelt.
The belts you can see are the ancilliary drive belts (often - but incorrectly these days - called fan belts). These belts drive items such as the power steering pump, air conditioning compressor and alternator, but not the camshaft.
