Dear advisor,

On 30 January my car had a used automatic transmission installed, costing $2,300. Soon after, I checked the level of its AT fluid and it was low. Yesterday, I rang the workshop to say that I would like them to check and top up. I was told that as it is a Honda, I should check the AT fluid level with the engine off after it has been running for a while. When I did that, the fluid level was not even registering on the dipstick.

My car has travelled 136 km since the AT was installed. Has some damage already happened because the fluid has been so low? Would this shorten the natural life of the AT? Has a leak caused the AT fluid to become so low? Should I ask the workshop to check carefully for possible leaks and then top up the fluid level?

I would appreciate your advice. Thanks.

It's unlikely any damage has been done if the trans seems to be operating correctly - not slipping etc. However, you should get the workshop to check for leaks and re-check the level.
Depending on the model, some transmissions are required to be checked at specific temperatures and under other specific circumstances.
