I note that the tow weight for my 4WD Hilux is 2500.

I also note that the fifth wheel caravan I want to buy / tow has a laden weight of 2900kg.

Does this discrepancy pose a problem for capability, warranty etc.?

Feed back from Toyota NZ would suggest they do not support exceeding the recommended towing capacity of 2500kg.

They have no evidence which would suggest a higher load capacity would be appropriate with the load dispersed via the fifth wheel coupling and the body.

As far as warranty goes, any issues would be handled individually in my opinion.

If a fault was proven to be the result of stepping outside Toyota's recommendations, then it is possible a claim would be declined.

To be fair to Toyota or any other manufacturer in this situation; if they have no control over how non genuine accessories like the fifth wheel coupling are attached to the vehicle, then it is almost impossible to guarantee normal warranty conditions would apply.

The loads on any towing vehicle are not confined to any one particular driving condition. For example, the loads applied going down a hill or when the brakes are applied can be equal or worse than towing uphill's or on an open highway.

The current braking rule states a vehicle must be able to stop within 7 meters at 30kph. This includes towing a caravan, trailer or boat. You may want to ensure that can be achieved if you go ahead with the purchase

Best advice I can give is to seek evidence or some confidence from the person installing the coupling or selling the fifth wheeler that the load is safe and appropriate for this vehicle.

My research into this subject would lead me to believe the HiLux is one of the preferred vehicles for this particular application.

You may also consider getting contact names from the fifth wheel suppliers and asking their customers for a few tips or advice.
