Dear advisor,

For a 2001 Suzuki Alto that has done about 130,000 kms without suspension problems, would it be worthwhile replacing its suspension bushes with new ones (silicone ones maybe)? Would new bushes lead to much improved ride?

Thanks.

Cheers :)

It won't be worthwhile replacing suspension bushes, or any part for that matter, if it is in perfect condition. If it is worn or unsafe then replace it. The original rubber bushes will provide the best ride comfort and even though the nolathane/urethane bushes will supply a slightly harsher ride most drivers won't even notice the difference.

Many thanks Donavan. Would you say that the suspension system of such an age and mileage have deteriorated a lot, leading to a much less comfortable ride compared to a new one? Or is the ride still quite similar to new? Is it usual to wait till there are leaks and/or other malfunctions before replacement? Do WOFs identify suspension faults? Cheers.

A WOF inspection is a safety inspection and will identify safety concerns according to the VIRM but you should have your vehicle serviced on a regular basis to detect if there are any problems (at the early stages) rather than leaving it until it becomes a safety issue. It is definitely not normal to replace parts that are in perfect working condition but a mechanic should be able to advise you if there are signs that a part is nearing its end of life or faulty - but no one has a crystal ball. For example if the CV boots show signs of cracking then have them replaced before they leak but you wouldn't replace them if there is no signs to suggest they are worn. Suspension components can be checked for wear by a mechanic.

The wear on the suspension bushes would depend on the type of roads/conditions the vehicle has been subjected to. I suggest you have a mechanic inspect the vehicle and advise you if any parts needs replacing.

The vehicle will not ride the same as it was new with a worn suspension bushes.
