My 2009 Subaru Impreza is due for it's 100,000km service which includes a cam belt replacement. I have been quoted over $1,800 for this service. Part of the cost is a recommended routine replacement of the water pump as it is apparently easier to do in conjunction with the cam belt.

Does this cost reasonable - it seems very high to me when my other cars have cost around $600 for a cam belt? Do I need to do the water pump too? Also, for a major service like this should I use an authorised Subaru dealer (where the quote is from) or it is fine to use my local mechanic who will be cheaper?

Kind regards
Bill

The quote for the complete 100,000km service including the cambelt and water pump looks correct for the agents. The replacement of the cambelt and water pump alone can cost around $1000.00 and the service includes a lot more items too - it is a major service. You should ask for a detailed quote to see what it includes (diff oils for the front and rear, transmission service, coolant, etc.).

It is recommended to replace the water pump at the same time as the cambelt replacement as the chances of the water pump lasting another 100 000km is unlikely and when it fails you will need to replace the cambelt again.

A good local mechanic will have no problem carrying out this work and it should cost less too but ensure all the items listed on your quote from the agents are also quoted at the local garage.
