Hi Jack,
I bought honda stream 2006 recently. After few weeks I noticed that coolant was at low level. I went to the dealer and he toped it up for me. After this I did not check it for a month and there is no visible leak. But now I noticed that it has gone down an inch. Is that normal? does coolant evaporates.?
Thanks,
Vikram

This does sound like you have either an air lock which is working its way out or there is a problem with the vehicle. You should get a mechanic to do a cooling system pressure test and a TK test. The pressure test will indicate if the cooling system is holding the pressure sufficiently or there is a leak and the TK test will give you an indication if there is any problem with the cylinder head and gasket.

If you have topped up the cooling system when it was hot then it will drop down when it cools. But to be safe rather get it checked out as a cooling system is a vital part of the engine and if the motor overheats it will cause major damage.

If you have bought the vehicle from a registered dealer then you should consult with them first.

Hi Donavan,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I went to AA New Lynn yesterday and got the pressure and TK test done. They also checked all the hoses, water pump and other areas for leak.
As per the test results everything is fine, there is no leak. So, it must be an air lock, as you said, working its way out. There is one thing disturbing me that how air has entered into the sealed system and what I can do to prevent this in the future. Hope to hear from you soon.
Thanks,
Vikram

It is possible that the previous owner has worked on the cooling system prior to you purchasing the vehicle and the system wasn't bled properly - air lock.

If the dealer has confirmed you cooling system is all fine then at this stage you do not have a problem to be concerned about. The cooling level will rise and fall slightly due to expansion when hot and contraction when cold.

You should regularly check your engine fluid levels and if you have any concerns take the vehicle to a mechanic to be checked out.
