Hi Jack

I have had a quote to get a cambelt for my car. However it was significantly more expensive than the last time I got one done. How much realistically should it cost to get it done on a Toyota corolla 1993?

To replace the cambelt only you are looking at around $350.00 but this price is quickly driven upwards if you need to replace the waterpump and drive belts.

The place i went to wanted to charge me $800, would that be right if the water pump and drive belts needed replacing?

Also , it is leaking oil from :
Rear sharft seal
Pully seal
Camsharft seal
and sump Gaslet
The mechanic i saw said this would cost about $900 to fix.

if this is the case i think it is better to get a new car.
How much do you think I would be looking at paying to get those fixed?

As I said before the water pump and other extras can quickly push the price up. I would've thought around $600,00 but it depends on what extras are on the quote and the dealer's labour rate.

It seems that the dealer is quoting on nearly every seal on the engine. If all the seals are leaking it could indicate excessive sump compression (worn engine rings) which the mechanic needs to determine but the engine should firstly be cleaned then run to determine which seal/seals are leaking.

If you like you can e-mail us a copy of the quote for the cambelt and waterpump replacement to aatech@aa.co.nz and we can advise you if it looks reasonable or not.
