I was surprised when my wife was told that her 2010 TK Barina needed it's cam belt changed at 60,000km. Do other similar cars need the cam belt replaced so quickly? Why is the mileage for cam belt replacement reducing?

Most modern cars of this era do not have belts, they have chains which do not require changing at all. Of those cars that do have belts, most have a replacement interval of 100,000km.
You are correct though about the Barina TK, the belt interval is 60,000km or 48 months, whichever comes first. We are aware of other GM product that has a similar interval to your Barina and which were very prone to breaking belts if neglected, therefore, it would be advisable to have it done.
