Forum Servicing, repair, faults and reliability 1997 Subaru Impreza - do I need to replace the cambelt?

I have a 1997 Impreza, 1800cc non-turbo, and I have heard that this kind of engine doesnt get damaged if the cambelt breaks - can you confirm if this is the case. I believe the engine is a EJ18 model.

Correct, this is a non-interference engine, so in the event of a cambelt breaking, it shouldn't do any damage.
