I am looking to purchase a Toyota Caldina although the one I have found is a 2.0 litre 4-Wheel Drive.
Are 4WD cars reliable and do they cause many problems and added costs?

The Caldina 4X4 system is an "Active" System which remains engaged at all times. It cannot be switched off or controlled in any way.

Although the system is reliable, it has a lot more moving parts such as a transfer box, driveshaft and rear differential with drive axles.

Another characteristic of a 4X4 is higher wear on the rear tyres compared to its two wheel drive sibling.

Fuel consumption can also increases by approximately about half a litre per 100 kilometre.

Two wheel drives are without any doubt cheaper to operate and to maintain.

An advantage of a full time or an active 4X4 system is that it is ready when you need it most.

You get better traction on slippery roads, this of course is a huge advantage when driving on gravel or snow.

Keep in mind, the suspension set up is designed for normal road use not for serious off-roading.

Hi there

I am also looking at a second hand Caldina 2.0 (1996-98) and am tossing up between a 4x4 or 2wd.

I would prefer a 4wd but imagine these older models could have some mechanical issues.

I was wondering what the towing capability of the 2wd version is as i have a small inflatable boat weighing about 200kg, not sure trailer weight.

Any advise/tips to look out for would be much appreciated.

The 4wd (AWD) model will have a slightly higher fuel consumption as well as costing more to maintain. The 2wd would be a better option unless you really need an AWD car - depending on where you intend on launching the boat. I do not have the exact towing weight for the Caldina but the recommended towing weight (unbraked) should be around 450kg - you can contact a Toyota dealer to confirm this. I cannot see that towing the inflatable boat and trailer with a 2wd would be a problem as it is pretty light and the 2.0L engine will pull it without too much effort. Also see more towing info.
