Have managed to remove switch. Just want to be sure it controls the shifter release or if there is another control mechanism. Also if the switch is universal on 91 -98 Corollas as there is no identifying numbers on switch except for 91 -98 scratched/etched on it.

It is the brake light signal (ie: voltage to the brake lights) that operates the lock-out solenoid for your gear shift, so as long as there is no fault in the wiring, the switch is likely to be the problem. You can check if the car will come out of Park by bridging the wires on the brake light switch together (which should also operate the brake lights). With the brake lights on, you should be able to engage the gears.
You need to check with your parts supplier to see if the switch is correct for your car.
