We have a Golf 1.6 (2000 model) which has done 65,000 km's. We typically do about 10,000 km's per year. Having the vehicle serviced by VW itself, and with the last service done in May this year, we were told that unless we do more than 15,000 km per year, we only need to bring it back in one year for the next service.
I feel sort of guilty for not taking it back for a smaller service maybe towards December, for just a plug and oil change?
My question is - is this service interval normal? We use the vehicle on a daily basis for short town based trips.

The VW dealer is doing the right thing in my opinion which is great to hear. The car only needs to be serviced by the dealer once per year provided you don't exceed the 10,000km limit.
It does create some responsibility for you as an owner however, as it does not pay to totally forget the simple checks like tyre pressures and the oil and water levels between servicing.
Checking every three months is ideal but if most conscientious motorists were being totally honest once every four or five months is probably closer to reality.
It's all about having confidence and a good relationship with your service dealer. You are absolutely correct if you are using the vehicle more over the Xmas period and want a good peace of mind check then book it in closer to the time.
A good service provider will do the necessary checks without going over board and will take into account your past service history. Judging by the age and mileage of your vehicle I assume the cam belt has been changed at some time in the past.
