I have a Ford Mondeo 2001 and it is making a grating repetitive noise when revs increase to a certain level in each of the gears. the sound seems to come from the front, although I have comment from friends it might be the transmission. the car has done 161,000 kms. The sound is not too loud but has always been there since I bought car in beginning 2010. in that time i have travelled out of town regularly. I need an expert opinion as to whether it is a transmission fault as the cost to fix is very high and I admit I am hoping its not transmission problem. Also I am careful not to push the car into higher revs too often as it might hasten the transmission failure. I hope you can give me your thoughts on this matter.

Without the benefit of hearing the noise it's impossible to say as it really could be anything. As your friends suggest, it could be the transmission, but not necessarily.
I suggest you take it to a mechanic for a diagnosis. You don't say where in the country you are, but you could try contacting an AA Auto Centre or AA Licensed Repairer.
