I purchased a vehicle (Mitsubishi outlander 2005) week ago from a reputed car dealer in Christchurch. They gave me only one key. When I requested for the second key, they are offering me half price for key which will be $360/ (full price $720/-).

I am not sure where I stand on this, I believe I am entitled to 2 key, specially vehicle is values around $20,000/-.

Fact: When purchasing, they did not say not giving duplicate key, nether did I asked it from them. assumed normally giving two key is the standard practice.

Please clarify this.

Regards
Tyrone

Unfortunately, if this wasn't negotiated at the time of purchase, the dealer is under no obligation to provide a second key.
In our experience, almost all Japanese imports arrive in NZ with only one key, so that is all customers end up getting. While you don't say whether the vehicle is NZ new or an import, this is a very common situation.

Thanks for explanation, even I don’t like it. Lol. My fault did not asked for it. Unfortunately we don’t purchase cars regularly. May be some website we need to look for tips before purchasing a car?

Vehicle is Japanese import. (GSH61)

Unfortunately, a locksmith can only cut a key blade which will not start the car. With modern keyless entry systems and transponder keys, your only option is usually to obtain a key and have it programmed by the main dealer.
