Hi there,

From what I have found online and heard from friends, I believe my car's cambelt is a bit loose. It makes a high pitch noise for about 10 seconds when I switch on the car and sometimes will go for longer if my air con is on or if the engine is really cold. I have also noticed lately a more faint squeal when I'm driving - more apparent in my front right wheel. I'm wanting to have these repaired and I was wondering what kind of ball park figure I will be looking at? I don't know a lot about cars so I am a prime target for the not so kind mechanics to take advantage of.

Thanks in advance,
Stacey

A squealing belt will be a drive belt, not the cambelt. Assuming it only adjustment, the cost should not be much at all - generally no more than about half an hour's labour at the very most.
The squeal from the front wheel will require some diagnosis, however it is likely to be brake pads. Depending on make and model of the car, this will vary, and also will depend on the condition of the brake rotors.
Once you know what the cause is, we might be able to give you some sort of idea of likely cost.
