Hi Jack,
I want to change transmission oil in my MMC Colt 2003 with CVT. Manufacturer recommendation is to use only Mitsubishi Diamond ATF SP-III. When I visited the workshop and asked which transmission fluid will be used for change they said Valvoline MaxLife ATF as it has Mitsubishi Diamond SP-II and SP-III applications listed.
But according to this document http://www.valvoline.com/pdf/maxlife_atf.pdf this ATF is NOT recommended for use in most CVTs.
I've discovered, that many ATF producers do not recommend using "multi tran" ATF in CVTs even though the suitable ATF type is listed in the specs of the oil, but it is actually applicable only to conventional AT.
Could you please recommend ATF that can be used in my case?
Is it safe to use multi-tran ATF if SP-III type is listed along with Dexron-II and Dexron-III (which are not compatible with SP-III)? Can this be harmful to the CVT push-belt?
Thanks!

You are correct that this fluid is not recommended for "MOST" CVTs. However, some Colts do use this product.
The transmission dipstick will have either SP-III or J1 marked on it. If it has SP-III, then this is the correct fluid. If it has J1, it uses a specific fluid for the Jatco CVT transmission, and this fluid is also available from Mitsubishi dealers.

Food for thought - Mitsi dealers have Dia queen by the drum load. For anything to do with the trans I would be taking it to a Mitsi dealer
