I have noticed that there is a rattle coming from the drivers side wheet when driving over bumps and rough unsealed roads. Also, there is a tapping noise when it starts up but disappears when warmed up. What could be the causes of these. Any suggestions as to what the cause of these could be? It is a Mazda Demio 2004? Thanks.

The rattle can possibly be coming from worn brake calliper pins or even a stone lying loose on the lower suspension arm can cause this. If the noise goes away when slightly depressing the brake pedal and reappears when releasing the pedal then it is likely coming from the brake calliper pins. The noise from the suspension shouldn't be taken lightly and you should have it checked out by a mechanic as at worst it could be a worn ball joint or shock absorber.

For the engine sound you should check the engine oil level to ensure it is topped up to the correct level. If the vehicle hasn't had a service for a while it might be due for one. Most engines have a slight tapping noise on start up as the oil is thicker when cold and it varies depending on the oil type used. If you are concerned you need to have a mechanic listen to the sound to verify if it is indeed normal.

Thank you for your helpful reply. I only bought this car at the beginning of December 2012 from a dealer. Could I take it back to them to remedy the fault?

If you bought the vehicle from a dealer (not an auction or private sale) then you should take it back to them to have a look at and rectify if necessary. The CGA (consumer guarantees act) covers you for situations like this.

I took my car back to the dealer and they heard the car noises that they said they thought they could fix it. The car had been with them for 3 weeks, so I went and saw them and they said that they couldn't get rid of the engine noise, so now want to replace the engine with a used engine. The car is a 2004 mazda demio and has only done 66k. Should I let them put in a used engine with a guarantee or ask for a replacement car?
