The vehicle will need to be transported to a Vehicle compliance centre for the compliance inspection. The closest AA compliance centre is in Christchurch - Sydenham Vehicle Compliance centre, Cnr Buchan and Brougham street Sydenham - telephone 03 964 5567.

Costs will be in the region of $1000.00 (might be cheaper or dearer depending on the vehicle type) for the compliance process and 12 months rego and plates.

All the components (safety, suspension, brakes, lighting and body structure) will be inspected to ensure they comply with the NZ standards. If the vehicle meets the standards a MR2A document will be issued for vehicle registration.

Always a good idea to get an idea of these costs before purchasing a dereg car!

You will have the compliance and rego costs. If it fails on rust or previous accident damaged you are then up for repair certification costs. This can involve hours of work at a certified panelbeaters getting it repair, or the previous repair stripped back and redone. You could be up for the repair and the certification cost which can EASILY put at least an extra $1000 on to what started to be a cheap car!
