Hi
my Jap import VW Golf MarkV has thrown up NOX sensor faults (engine warning light) which a VW service co has attempted to fix without going down replacement route. NOX sensor approx $1100 to replace. Lots of forums on Web highlighting similar NOX sensor issues including repeat failures even after new replacments. My qustions are (1) what effect if any will running the car with a faulty NOX sensor have - esp re performance, reliability? (2) any known work arounds to avoid spending nearly 10% of purchase price to fix a known VW reliability problem?
thanks

If your mechanic is 100% sure the cause of the light coming on is the NOX sensor, there's really no option but to replace the sensor.
While we would highly recommend replacing the sensor, if you must drive the car through the Christmas period as it is, it should be OK but it's not completely without risk. In the long term it is possible that further damage could be caused (perhaps to the catylitic convertor etc, due to unburnt fuel/misfiring etc).

Not the answer I was hoping for, but thanks for your prompt advice nevertheless! Thanks

Hi there,I would be looking to the usa for the part.I have seen a comment on this subject that says these cost $35 in the usa.

It would be nice if this is correct, but somehow I very much doubt it. I've heard stories such as this before where people have ended up with the wrong thing. (eg; a knock sensor instead of a NOX sensor). Obviously, if you can get the right thing at such a bargain basement price - great, but treat it with caution.
