I bought a 2001 NZ new VW Bora 6 months ago. At the recent WoF inspection they said the 2 rear tyres will need changing in the near future.

I currently have all 4 tyres as Michelin Pilot Primacy 195/65 R15.

A few questions:

* Which is the best tyre for this car?
* How are Goodyear NCT5's for this car?
* How are the Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza re001?
* Would it be better to have all 4 as Michelin Pilot Primacy or okay to mix (Pilot Primacy both front and Goodyear NCT5 both back) as Michelins are really expensive and not much in stock.

An interesting question and the old saying 'you get what you pay for' certainly applies when it comes to selecting the best tyre for your needs.

The Michelin Pilot Primacy is a tyre designed for the luxury / performance end of the market. It is able to handle high performance and spirited driving while also providing in-cabin comfort and excellent wet weather traction.

It's not a cheap tyre however with my sources quoting around $300 per tyre fitted (incl GST).

Other options in the Michelin range are the XMI ($198) or the MXV8 ($253).

The Goodyear NCT5 is a good all-round tyre without the top end performance of the Michelin. It retails for around $169 fitted including GST.

Another tyre we have recommended to us for your vehicle is the Goodyear Excellence which retails for around the $172 mark, fitted and including GST.

We believe the Bridgestone Adrenalin Potenza is only available for 16-inch wheels upwards. It is a tyre which has similar characteristics to the Michelin Primacy.

Ideally it is best to have the same four tyres on the vehicle, particularly if you want the best overall performance from the car.

We found Newmarket tyres in Auckland very helpful when researching this question and would recommend a phone call to them to discuss your needs further if required. Phone 09 520 0661.
