Despite what you and others have said about the Toyota/Chevrolet Cavalier, they perform extremely well and I've had a good run with mine for 3 years now (fingers crossed).

My only expense has been a second hand alternator at $120, and as is common, one window doesn't work (motors are on the net locally for $110). I have friends with much more expensive cars who would kill for repair bills like this!

But very occasionally, say once every 3 months or so, the engine light comes on for anything between an hour and 24 hours. I have an original Chevrolet handbook, and it says the light means emissions are outside prescribed operating parameters. I thought this may mean the catalytic converter is on its way out. Is this feasible?

The handbook also says it can be something minor such as a slightly imperfect seal on the fuel cap, but I wondered how the system could identify that.

Brian.

I'm glad to hear you have had a good run out of the Cavalier and no doubt there will be others who have enjoyed a similar experience.

One of the biggest issues with the model however is the lack of product knowledge within the trade and the price of some parts. I have heard for example a front windscreen is horrendously priced if you have to purchase a genuine replacement. More than the cars value in many cases.

Take for example also the problem you have with the engine light. There is not enough information available to garages to help identify the cause of the problem.

Catalytic convertors are often not the cause of such problems but have been known to be removed as part of a guessing game some play in a process of elimination. At hourly rates upwards of $60 these days, that is a situation you need to try and avoid.

It's also hard to imagine a faulty fuel cap seal causing the problem either.

The only thing I can suggest is to have any under the bonnet emission piping checked for a blockage or even a vacuum leak.

If a reader has experienced a similar problem I will pass on their recommended cause of action.
