With remotes all having different frequencies (or so I thought), is this actually a true story? Could it happen, and how could it happen technically?

This would be most unusual, but is entirely feasible. With any wireless signal, there is the risk of interference from rogue signals emitting from unwanted sources.
We are aware of a couple of similar (but not exactly the same) circumstances that have occured locally. One related to a wireless reversing camera in a vehicle which picked up CCTV signals from petrol station forecourts and the other involved an airfield activating the remote locking/unlocking and alarm on a particular vehicle.
This is the reason why you are not permitted to use a cellphone on an aircraft.
As I say, it would be a rare occurance, but we believe it could happen.
