My1996 Mitubishi Diamante is showing wear on the outside edges of the rear tyres.Is this an alignment issue or can it be worn shock absorbers.The car has done 126,000 ks.A mechanic told me that the shocks on these cars had a very short lifespan.

This is more than likely a wheel alignment problem. You should take the vehicle to have the wheel alignment checked and have the repairer test your shocks as well. You should request a before w/a printout and a w/a printout after the adjustments have been made - have the technician explain to you what he found wrong. If the shocks are worn (have them tested first) you will need to replace them before carrying out the w/a. You should also check your tyre pressures on a regular basis as incorrect tyre pressures can also cause tyres to wear uneven.
