I recently purchased a 1.8 litre 2001 Nissan Avenir. The transmission fluid is clean and at the correct level, but it is clear, not red/pink which I believe automatic fluid should be.

I phoned Nissan, who advised me the correct transmission fluid is Dexron 3.

All Dexron 3 I have used before has been red in colour, or is there a possibly some Dexron 3 compatible fluid in Japan is clear.

The three fluids that you need to keep in good condition are the engine / radiator and transmission.

All three have the potential to costs you plenty if left to deteriorate.

I have never heard of a clear transmission fluid to be honest especially Dexron which as you say, is normally a deep red colour.

Best advice I can give is to get the transmission flushed and new fluid added ASAP.

It may pay to get the transmission performance checked out thoroughly at the same time.
