Dear advisor,

When my car is just started, the engine (including timing chain) is normally a wee bit noisy but then it quietens down when driven. Would it benefit the chain and help it last longer, if the car is left to idle for a minute (when started from cold), before driving it off gently?

I cannot see any reason why you shouldn’t do this. I suggest you have the problem seen to by a reputable mechanic. It could be as simple as fitting a genuine oil filter or something major like replacing the timing chain tensioner.
