I have moved into a house where the driveway up to the door is on a steep incline. Is it less strain on my car to park facing uphill or downhill?

It really makes no difference. As long as you leave the car in Park (or in first gear if it's a manual) with the handbrake properly applied, it makes no difference to the car.

Thanks for that! And while we're on the subject, when parking on the flat, I've been told I should leave the car in neutral (manual car) with the handbrake on. Isn't it safer to leave it in first gear?

If it's on a completely flat surface where it can't roll anywhere, it doesn't really matter. On a hill, it's always safer to leave it in gear.
