Hello,

We are looking to buy a hatchback from about 2001 - 2006, and because of crash test results we favour either a Ford Focus, a Toyota Corolla, a Nissan Tiida, a Honda Jazz or Civic, or a Mazda 3. We'll probably have to (reluctantly) go with an automatic as manuals are scarce. We usually run our cars up to about 200,000 kms. Do you know whether the automatic transmissions vary in reliability in these makes, and which are likely to be the best at higher k's? We know to avoid CVT's. I've also read your comment that the earlier Honda Civic transmissions can be troublesome and expensive. Did these eventually improve, and in what year?

Also, do you know how a Ford Focus might compare in overall reliability with the Japanese makes?

Thanks for your help,

Bert Jackson.

Regardless of make and model, a 200,000km car starts to become high risk. With increasing complex technology (particularly with electronics controlling transmissions - in order to keep fuel consumption down) the more basic you can keep things, the less likely an expensive failure as mileage increases.
Of the models you mention, the Corolla perhaps has the best reputation for reliability, but it is considered to be a fairly dull car by many. The Jazz of this era had a CVT, and it did not enjoy a great reputation for reliability. NZ New Tiidas around this age had conventional autos, but imports had CVTs, so if you are considering a Tiida, check to see what transmission it has.
Civic transmissions gave problems on older, high mileage cars - the jury is still out on later ones as the mileages are still not generally high yet.
Of all the models you mention, the Mazda3 and Ford Focus are arguably the two best driver's cars, and if we had to pick between them (given the high mileage you intend doing) we'd go for the Mazda.
In short, from a reliability perspective, the Corolla is probably the best choice. If you want a car that's good to drive and still high in the reliability stakes, it would be the Mazda3.
Ultimately, ensure whichever car you choose has a full service history and been well maintained. However, every car becomes risky with age and high mileage.
