I am looking a buying a 2wd double cab ute in the 2002 -2005 age bracket. It is likely to be a choice between a Ford Courier and Holden Rodeo as I can't stretch to the extra cost of a Hilux. Are there any known issues with these vehicles especially as they get into the higher ks?

In our experience the Ford Courier and Holden Rodeo are not particularly high-risk vehicles. However, as with all vehicles, as mileage increases, so does risk.
In this sector, (ie; the ute market) the Hilux commands the highest price due to its popularity, but we are not aware of any particular issues with the Courier or Rodeo that would make them any less reliable.
If looking at high mileage vehicles, just beware of the usual concerns; engine wear, clutch problems, steering/suspension and driveline (UJ's, CV's etc).
A vehicle with a full and known service history is best if you can find one.
