Hello there,

We are looking at buying one of these 2004-2006 models. They seem underpriced compared to Mazda 3s, Corollas and Nissans. Is there anything we should be wary of? We are looking at NZ New models so wondering if they are all CVT autos. I remember a friend saying that his Galant was expensive to service because of Mitsubishi's unique engine configurations and sometimes complicated engine management systems. Is this likely to be the case with the Lancer? We are looking for a lighter car with at least a 2.0L engine which seems to be difficult fo find for under $10k

Thanks in advance
Ross

The 2004 - 2006 NZ new Mitsubishi Lancers are good models and are a good choice. In general they are very reliable, drive well and are not expensive to maintain. The automatic transmissions are standard type, not CVT's. Transmissions serviced on time using the correct type of fluid don't seem to fail. The engines are 2lt or 2.4lt and are proven and reliable. The 2.4lt certainly packs a bit more punch and feels more lively but of course at the cost of fuel. The chassis are good and strong and so are the car's electonics. This model Lancer is not regarded as a problem car. Import Lancers are called Cedia's which use CVT transmissions and GDI engines.

The GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) engines were used in some imported Galants and caused the owners as well as the mechanics a few head aches, hence the reputation for expensive maintenance.

The look of the mid 2000 Lancer is more conservative than the Mazda 3 and not quite as "sporty", but all in all, it is not a bad choice.
